How your clothing affects your embodiment

When you’re choosing what to wear, don’t forget to include how it affects your embodiment. Here’s twelve ways:

  1. You might have on clothes that are irritating. Something like a scratchy tag could be making your mood worse even if you don’t realise it.
  2. Similarly, you might have on something that feels great, either to your skin that’s wearing it or to the skin that’s touching it.
  3. You might be wearing something that feels good to move in, such as the swishy pants above.
  4. Some clothing will change your posture, such as heels, a corset, or a backpack. These postural changes affecting your brain is a major part of embodiment work.
  5. You might wear something that allows or encourages you to move in more ways, either wide or stretchy or gussetted or modifiable.
  6. The patterns and colours of your clothing might affect your mood. For me, wearing bright clothes can make me feel more outgoing.
  7. Some clothes have specific content that generates an emotional response, such as a flag or a slogan.
  8. Similarly, some of your clothes will have associated memories that change you when you wear them.
  9. Clothing might remind you or bring forward in you an archetype or character.
  10. Clothes can symbolise or evoke a ceremony such as a promotion, graduation, or qualification.
  11. Clothing might remind you that you’re playing a role.
  12. And lastly, your clothes will change how other people react to you, and that MAY also change your own embodiment.

These aren’t factors to keep “in mind” but states to feel with your body. Become aware of how they feel so that you can choose. Who will you be today in what you’re wearing?
